Enter your metres to get a can count.

An estimate, not a promise. Real coverage depends on surface, porosity, line width and pace. Ordering a spare avoids running short.

How to use it

Straight off the can — no training or extra equipment needed.

  1. Clean and dry

The surface needs to be clean and dry — the only preparation needed.

  2. Shake for two minutes

A full two minutes brings the pigment back into suspension for an even line.

  3. Invert and spray

Held 50–75mm off the surface. Closer gives a narrower, sharper mark — useful for spot-marking services.

  4. Clear the nozzle

Turned upright and sprayed for a few seconds after use, clearing the nozzle so it doesn't block.

Which colour?

Seven colours. For utility marking, most sites mirror the colour of the service below.

Colour conventions vary by site and client — always follow the scheme you're given. There is no single UK standard for marking paint colour; these are the conventions the trade works to.

FAQs

Common questions before ordering Survey Paint.

Read the guides
How long before it disappears?

Around 2–3 months before it starts to break down, depending on UV exposure and the surface. For longer-lasting lines, use Line Marker Paint.

Which colour for which service?

Most sites mirror the colour of the buried service: yellow for gas, blue for water, red for electricity. That's convention rather than regulation — NJUG / Street Works UK colour-codes the apparatus itself, not the spray. The scheme specified for the job takes precedence.

Does it come off cleanly?

As a temporary paint it is designed to fade and weather off over a couple of months rather than need removing. On sealed or delicate surfaces such as block paving, a discreet test mark first confirms it lifts as expected.

Will it work in cold or wet weather?

The surface has to be clean and dry for the paint to bond, so damp, frosty or greasy surfaces are best left until they have dried.

How many cans will I need?

Roughly 100 metres of 50mm line per can, halving to about 50 metres at 100mm. The calculator above gives a can count for a given line length; a spare avoids running short.

Will the colour match the swatch on screen?

Close, but not exact — no screen can reproduce sprayed paint. Where colour is critical, a single can confirms it before a bulk order.

Do I need a special applicator?

No. The can is inverted and works freehand — which is what most spot marking needs anyway.
